About Errachidia — Closest Airport to the Dunes
Errachidia is a modern administrative town at the head of the Ziz Valley, one of the longest palm oases in Morocco. For travellers it has one great advantage: an airport around two hours' drive from the dunes of Erg Chebbi. That makes it the fastest way to reach the Sahara from Casablanca, and the obvious choice for a short desert trip without long road transfers.
Why start your tour in Errachidia
For most visitors the Sahara is a long drive away: 9 hours or more from Marrakech or Fes. From Errachidia, it’s around two. Fly in, and you can ride a camel into the dunes the same afternoon. That makes Errachidia the best choice for a short trip, for travellers who don’t enjoy long days in a vehicle, or for anyone who wants more time in the desert itself.
Arriving in Errachidia
- By air: Moulay Ali Cherif Airport is just outside town, with domestic flights mostly connecting via Casablanca.
- By bus: coaches connect Errachidia with Fes, Marrakech and other major cities.

What to see on the way to the dunes
- The Ziz Valley and gorges: a green ribbon of palms and ksour winding through bare rock.
- The Blue Spring of Meski: a natural spring-fed pool in a palm grove.
- Erfoud and Rissani: fossil workshops, and the old Tafilalet market town with its traditional souk.
Good to know
