2-Day Errachidia to Merzouga Desert Tour

Errachidia is the closest city with an airport to the Erg Chebbi dunes. From Marrakech or Fes, the drive to Merzouga takes most of a day; from Errachidia, it takes about two hours. This private two-day round trip makes the most of that short distance. You’re picked up at the airport, the bus station or your hotel, and by late afternoon you’re riding a camel into the dunes for the sunset. The next morning, after sunrise and breakfast, a 4x4 excursion takes you to a nomad family and the Gnawa village of Khamlia before you head back north.

It’s the most efficient way to see the Sahara if your time is short, and the easiest option for anyone who doesn’t enjoy long days in a car.

The route at a glance

Getting to Errachidia

Errachidia’s Moulay Ali Cherif Airport has domestic flights, mostly connecting via Casablanca, so you can fly in from most European cities with one change. The city is also on the main bus routes from Fes, Meknes and Marrakech. Wherever you arrive, your driver meets you there. If you’re flying, we track your flight, and if it’s delayed we adjust the timing.

Day 1: springs, palms and the first dunes

Pickup is usually in the early afternoon, or timed to your arrival. Errachidia itself is a modern garrison town, but within 20 minutes you’re in much older country. The first stop is the Blue Spring of Meski, where clear water rises from the rock into a pool shaded by palms. Above the spring stand the crumbling walls of the old ksar of Meski, a fortified earthen village built along the edge of the oasis. It’s a good place to stretch your legs after a flight.

South of Meski, the road runs along the rim of the Ziz Valley. From the viewpoint, the palm grove below looks like a green river winding through the bare, stony desert, with earthen villages on either bank. The Ziz is the lifeline of the Tafilalet region, and the date palms along it are among the most productive in Morocco.

In Erfoud, the “date capital” of the south, you stop at a fossil workshop. The black marble quarried nearby is full of fossils from an ancient sea, and the workshops cut and polish it into everything from coasters to tabletops. You’ll see the raw slabs and how the ammonites and orthoceras appear as the stone is polished.

The last half hour to Merzouga crosses the flat, black hamada, and the dunes of Erg Chebbi rise higher and higher ahead, up to about 150 metres. In Merzouga, your camels are saddled and ready. You ride into the sand as the light turns golden, stop on a ridge for the sunset, and arrive at camp as the sky darkens. Your luggage travels separately by 4x4. The evening is dinner, Berber drumming and more stars than most people have ever seen.

Day 2: nomads, Gnawa music and the road back

Wake before dawn and climb a dune to watch the sun rise over the desert. Then ride back to Merzouga for breakfast.

The morning’s 4x4 excursion shows you the life around the dunes. Your driver takes you along desert tracks to the tent of a nomad family, where you’re offered mint tea and can learn how they move their goats and camels between wells and pastures through the year. Next is Khamlia, a small village founded by descendants of West Africans who came north with the caravans. Here, Gnawa musicians play the rhythmic, hypnotic music of their ancestors, with drums, chants and the iron castanets called qraqeb.

After the excursion you drive back north through Erfoud and along the Ziz Valley, arriving in Errachidia in the early afternoon, in time for an afternoon flight or bus.

Where you’ll sleep

One night at our luxury desert camp in Erg Chebbi. Each booking has its own private tent with an en-suite hot shower and flushing toilet, comfortable beds and electricity for charging. Heavy blankets are provided in winter, and family tents with extra beds are available on request. Dinner and breakfast are included.

What to bring

Because the tour is so short, you can travel light. Pack a small overnight bag for the camp with a warm layer for the evening, a scarf to protect your face from sun and wind on the camel, sunglasses, sunscreen and a head torch for walking around camp at night. A power bank is useful, although the tents have electricity for charging. Your main luggage stays in the 4x4 and is taken to camp separately.

Best time to go

March to May and October to November are the most comfortable months, with warm days and cool nights. December to February brings sunny days and cold nights at camp, when a warm layer is essential. From June to September, afternoons in Merzouga are very hot, often above 40°C, so the camel ride starts later and the 4x4 excursion earlier to avoid the worst of the heat.

Who this tour is for

Travellers who want the Sahara without the long drives, especially those flying into Errachidia for a short break or arriving by bus from elsewhere in Morocco. It’s also a good choice for families with young children and for older travellers, since no day has more than three hours on the road.

Good to know

• Timing your arrival: an arrival by early afternoon lets you reach the dunes comfortably before sunset. For later arrivals, we’ll adjust the plan.
• Best months: March to May and October to November. In summer, afternoons in Merzouga often exceed 40°C, so we time activities for early morning and late afternoon.
• Tips for musicians and nomad families are optional and not included in the price.
• Carry some cash: card payment is rare in the desert, so bring dirhams for lunch, drinks and tips on both days.
