3-Day Marrakech to Merzouga Desert Tour

Our 3-day private desert tour from Marrakech to Merzouga is the classic way to see the Sahara on a short trip. In three days you cross the High Atlas, visit Morocco’s most famous kasbah village, walk through a 300-metre-deep canyon and ride a camel into the tallest dunes in the country, Erg Chebbi. You spend the night in a desert camp with a private tent and bathroom, then return to Marrakech along a different road through the Draa Valley, so you never see the same landscape twice.

It’s a big loop of around 1,200 km, with a private driver who knows every viewpoint, lunch stop and shortcut along the way. You travel at your own pace: stop for photos whenever you like, and linger where you want to.

The route at a glance

• Day 1: Marrakech → Tizi n’Tichka pass → Ait Ben Haddou → Ouarzazate → Skoura → Valley of Roses → Dades Valley (about 350 km)
• Day 2: Dades Valley → Todra Gorge → Tinejdad → Erfoud → Merzouga, then by camel into Erg Chebbi (about 290 km)
• Day 3: Erg Chebbi sunrise → Rissani → Alnif → N’Kob → Draa Valley → Ouarzazate → Tizi n’Tichka → Marrakech (about 560 km)

Day 1: over the High Atlas to the Dades Valley

We pick you up from your riad or hotel in Marrakech in the morning. Within an hour the palm groves give way to the foothills of the High Atlas, and the road begins to climb through Berber villages and walnut trees to the Tizi n’Tichka pass at 2,260 metres, one of the highest road passes in North Africa. In winter the peaks around you are often covered in snow; in spring the lower slopes are green and full of almond blossom. Your driver stops at the best viewpoints on the way up and down.

On the southern side of the mountains the landscape changes completely: red earth, flat-topped hills and oases. Your first major stop is Ait Ben Haddou, a fortified village (ksar) of earthen houses stacked up a hillside above the Ounila river. It has been a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1987 and has appeared in films such as Gladiator and in Game of Thrones. A local guide walks you through its lanes and up to the ruined granary at the top, where the view stretches across the valley.

After lunch (at your own cost) you pass Ouarzazate, home to Morocco’s film studios, and continue east through the Skoura palm grove, dotted with old kasbahs, and the Valley of Roses around Kelaat M’Gouna. The last stretch follows the Dades river to your hotel, where dinner is waiting.

Day 2: Todra Gorge and into the dunes

After breakfast, the road climbs past the rock formations the locals call the “monkey fingers”, then follows the valley east to Tinghir, a long green oasis beneath bare mountains. Just beyond the town is the Todra Gorge. At its narrowest point, the canyon walls rise around 300 metres on either side of a clear stream, and there is barely room for the road. You walk through the gorge with a local guide, often past climbers on the rock faces.

From Todra, the drive crosses open desert plateau via Tinejdad and Erfoud, the fossil capital of Morocco, where you can visit a workshop that cuts and polishes fossil stone. Then the first dunes appear on the horizon. In Merzouga, you leave your main luggage in the vehicle (or it goes to camp by 4x4) and meet your camels.

The ride into Erg Chebbi takes around an hour to an hour and a half. Your camel handler leads the caravan through the dunes and stops on a high ridge so you can climb up and watch the sunset turn the sand from gold to deep orange. You arrive at camp as the light fades. Dinner is served at camp, followed by Berber drumming around the fire. With no light pollution, the night sky in the Sahara is extraordinary. Sandboarding on the dunes is included whenever you want to try it.

Day 3: sunrise and the southern road back

Wake early for sunrise: just climb the dune behind camp and watch the light return to the sand. Then ride your camel back to Merzouga (or return by 4x4 if you prefer) for breakfast and a shower before the drive home.

Instead of retracing your steps, the return route goes west through Rissani, the historic capital of the Tafilalet, then through the black volcanic hills around Alnif and the villages of Tazzarine and N’Kob. It reaches the palm groves of the Draa Valley before rejoining the main road at Ouarzazate. The last part of the day crosses the High Atlas again over the Tizi n’Tichka. This is the longest day of the tour, around 9 hours with stops, and you arrive in Marrakech in the evening. Your driver drops you at your accommodation.

Where you’ll sleep

• Dades Valley: a traditional kasbah-style hotel with a private room and bathroom, dinner and breakfast.
• Erg Chebbi: our luxury desert camp in the dunes. Every booking has its own private tent with an en-suite bathroom, a hot shower and a flushing toilet, comfortable beds, and electricity for charging phones and cameras. In winter we provide heavy blankets, and family tents with extra beds are available on request.

About the camel ride

Everyone has their own camel, and the animals are led on foot by an experienced handler, so no riding experience is needed. If you’d rather not ride, or if anyone in your group has back or mobility problems, we can take you to camp by 4x4 at no extra cost. Your large bags travel by 4x4 as well, so you only need a small overnight bag on the camel. We recommend long, loose trousers for comfort.

Best time to go

The most comfortable months are March to May and September to November: warm, sunny days and cool nights. From December to February the days are still pleasant, but desert nights can drop close to freezing, and the Tizi n’Tichka occasionally closes for a few hours after heavy snow. June to August is very hot in the desert (often over 40°C), so we plan your camel ride for the late afternoon. If you travel between late April and mid-May, you’ll pass the Valley of Roses during the rose harvest.

Who this tour is for

This tour is ideal for first-time visitors who have a few days in Marrakech and want the classic Sahara experience of mountains, kasbahs, gorges and a night in the dunes. It suits couples, friends and families; we plan comfortable stops for children and can arrange family tents.

It’s less suited to travellers who dislike long drives: the route covers a lot of ground in three days. If that’s a concern, the 4-day loop from Marrakech spreads the same distance over one more day, and the 3-day tour with two desert nights gives you more time in the dunes.

Making it your own

Because the tour is private, you can adjust it:

• Finish in Fes instead: continue north through the Middle Atlas on day 3, as on our 3-day Marrakech to Fes tour.
• Add a second night in the dunes for a full desert day and a 4x4 excursion.
• Share the trip: on a budget, the 3-day shared desert tour follows the same route in a small group.

Good to know

• Day three is long (about 9 hours with stops), so don’t book an evening flight out of Marrakech that day.
• Lunches aren’t included, so you can choose where and how much to eat. Your driver will suggest good local restaurants along the way.
• Bring cash for lunches, drinks, monument entries and tips. ATMs are available in Ouarzazate, Tinghir and Erfoud, but not in the dunes.
• Pack layers: mountain passes and desert nights are cold even when the days are hot.
