3-Day Shared Desert Tour from Marrakech to Merzouga

This is the small-group version of our classic Sahara loop from Marrakech. You follow the same route as the private tour, over the High Atlas to Ait Ben Haddou, through the Dades Valley and Todra Gorge and by camel into the Erg Chebbi dunes, but you share the minibus with up to 11 other travellers and the cost of the trip with them too.

What makes it different from most budget group tours is what happens at night. Every booking, including solo travellers, gets its own room at the hotel and its own tent with a private bathroom at the desert camp, with no single supplement. You share the journey, not your bed.

The route at a glance

• Day 1: Marrakech → Tizi n’Tichka → Ait Ben Haddou → Ouarzazate → Valley of Roses → Dades Valley (about 350 km)
• Day 2: Dades Valley → Todra Gorge → Tinghir → Alnif → Merzouga, then by camel into Erg Chebbi (about 290 km)
• Day 3: Erg Chebbi → Draa Valley → Ouarzazate → Tizi n’Tichka → Marrakech (about 560 km)

How a shared tour works

• Group size: between 4 and 12 travellers, usually a mix of nationalities, ages and travel styles. The small cap means stops never turn into a crowd.
• Schedule: the group follows a set plan with fixed departure times and regular stops for photos, coffee and lunch. Your driver keeps an eye on the time so everyone reaches camp for sunset.
• Pickup: around 7:30am from your riad, or from the closest meeting point the minibus can reach. Much of the Marrakech medina is closed to vehicles, so we’ll send you clear directions to your meeting point before the tour.
• Language: the tour runs in English, and your driver is happy to explain the places you pass.
• Local guides: at Ait Ben Haddou and the Todra Gorge, you can explore on your own or hire a local guide on the spot.
• Minimum numbers: departures run with at least 4 guests. If a date doesn’t reach the minimum, we’ll offer you another date or an upgrade to a private tour.

Day 1: across the mountains

The minibus heads out of Marrakech into the foothills of the High Atlas and climbs through switchbacks to the Tizi n’Tichka pass at 2,260 metres. There are photo stops on the way up, at the top and on the descent. By late morning you reach Ait Ben Haddou, the fortified earthen village on the old caravan route to the Sahara. Walk across the river and up through the ksar to the granary at the summit for the best view.

After lunch, the route passes Ouarzazate and heads east along the valley of kasbahs, through the Skoura oasis and the rose-growing town of Kelaat M’Gouna, to your hotel in the Dades Valley. You arrive in the late afternoon, with time to relax before dinner with the group.

Day 2: the gorge and the dunes

The morning begins at the Todra Gorge, where the canyon walls close in to just a few metres apart and rise around 300 metres above the stream. You have time to walk through the narrowest part before rejoining the minibus. The road then crosses the open desert via Tinghir and Alnif, and the dunes of Erg Chebbi appear ahead.

In Merzouga, pack what you need for the night in a small bag. Your main luggage stays safely in the vehicle. The camel ride into the dunes takes about an hour and a half, with a stop on a ridge for sunset. At camp, dinner is followed by a fire, Berber drums and stargazing, and it’s often the evening when the group really gets to know each other. Try sandboarding on the dunes while you’re there, too.

Day 3: back to Marrakech

Early risers climb the dunes for sunrise before the ride back to Merzouga for breakfast. The final day is a long one, around 9 hours with stops, taking the southern route west through the Draa Valley and back over the High Atlas. You reach Marrakech in the early evening, and the minibus returns you to your riad or meeting point.

• Dades Valley: a kasbah-style hotel, with a private room and bathroom for each booking.
• Erg Chebbi: our desert camp, with a private tent for each booking, an en-suite bathroom with hot shower and flushing toilet, and electricity for charging. In winter we add heavy blankets to every bed.

Travelling solo

This tour is designed with solo travellers in mind. You get the company of a group during the day and your own space at night, with no single supplement to pay. Meals are taken together, so there’s always someone to share a tagine with, but no one will mind if you’d rather have a quiet evening in your room.

Tips for a great shared tour

• Be ready a few minutes early on day one. Pickups are spread across the city, and the first morning sets the rhythm for the whole group.
• Pack a small day bag that stays with you on the minibus: water, a scarf, sunscreen, a power bank and a warm layer for the mountain pass.
• Bring headphones or a book for the longer stretches. The scenery is superb, but day three is a long drive.
• Tell us about dietary needs when you book, so the hotel and camp can prepare for you.
• Swap seats now and then. Everyone gets a turn at the window with the best views.

Best time to go

The shared tour runs all year. Spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November) have the most comfortable weather. Winter is quieter, with crisp, clear days and cold nights at camp. Summer is very hot in the desert, and the group’s timing is planned around the heat, with the camel ride in the late afternoon.

• Bring cash for lunches, drinks, entry fees, optional local guides and tips. There’s no ATM in the dunes.
