4-Day Shared Desert Tour from Fes to Marrakech

Most shared desert tours give you one night in the Sahara and a dawn departure. This one gives you two nights around Erg Chebbi and a relaxed day in between, at small-group prices. You travel from Fes to Marrakech in an air-conditioned minibus with up to 12 guests, sleeping first at a desert camp in the dunes and then at a riad on the edge of the sand, before continuing west through the Todra and Dades gorges and over the High Atlas.

The group shares the vehicle and the daily plan, but not the bedrooms. Every booking has its own tent at the camp and its own room at the riad and the kasbah hotel, and solo travellers pay no single supplement.

How the shared tour works

• Group size: a minimum of 4 and a maximum of 12 guests. If your date doesn’t reach the minimum, we offer another departure or an upgrade to the private tour.
• Departure: around 8:00 am from your riad in Fes or the nearest meeting point, with the exact time confirmed two days before.
• Included guiding: a local guide at Ait Ben Haddou and a half-day 4x4 excursion around Erg Chebbi.
• Meals: breakfast and dinner every day. Lunches are extra and paid on the spot.

The route at a glance

• Day 1: Fes → Ifrane → Azrou cedar forest → Midelt → Ziz Valley → Merzouga, then by camel to camp (about 470 km)
• Day 2: 4x4 loop around Erg Chebbi: nomads, Mfis and Khamlia, then an afternoon at the riad (about 60 km)
• Day 3: Merzouga → Rissani → Tinghir → Todra Gorge → Dades Valley (about 310 km)
• Day 4: Dades Valley → Ouarzazate → Ait Ben Haddou → Tizi n’Tichka → Marrakech (about 350 km)

Day 1: Fes to the dunes

The minibus leaves Fes and heads into the Middle Atlas, with a coffee break in Ifrane, a spotless mountain town of chalets and lawns. In the cedar forest past Azrou, the group stops to watch the Barbary macaques, then continues over the high plateau to Midelt for lunch.

The afternoon descent through the Ziz Gorges and the palm-filled Ziz Valley brings you to Merzouga by the late afternoon. Here you meet your camels for a ride of about an hour and a half into Erg Chebbi. There’s time on the dunes for sandboarding and for the sunset, and then you reach camp, where your luggage is waiting and dinner is served. The evening ends with drumming around the campfire.

Day 2: the desert at an easy pace

Sunrise is optional. If you’re up early, climb the nearest dune and watch the light spread over the sand. After breakfast, the group sets out by 4x4 on a half-day loop around the dunes.

You’ll share tea with a nomad family in their tent, and learn how they move their herds between wells and grazing land. Next is Mfis, a ghostly mining village near the Algerian border, abandoned when the lead mines closed. At Khamlia, Gnawa musicians play the rhythms their ancestors brought across the Sahara from West Africa.

By early afternoon you arrive at your riad on the edge of Erg Chebbi. The rest of the day is yours: a swim if the riad has a pool, a nap in the shade, or a walk out onto the dunes for the sunset. After a busy first day, most guests find this slower afternoon the most memorable part of the trip.

Day 3: Rissani, Todra and Dades

The group heads west through Rissani, the old Tafilalet capital. If it’s a Sunday, Tuesday or Thursday, its souk is full of farmers selling dates, spices and livestock.

The road then crosses the pre-Saharan plateau to Tinghir, a long oasis town set against the mountains. In the Todra Gorge you leave the bus and walk between rock walls that rise around 300 metres above the stream. In the afternoon you continue to the Dades Valley, where dinner and the night are at a kasbah hotel.

Day 4: Ait Ben Haddou and the High Atlas

The final day follows the Road of a Thousand Kasbahs west to Ouarzazate, the centre of Morocco’s film industry. At Ait Ben Haddou, a local guide leads the group up through the earthen ksar, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the backdrop for dozens of films. Then the minibus climbs over the Tizi n’Tichka pass, at 2,260 metres, and descends to Marrakech, where you’re dropped at your accommodation or the nearest car-accessible point in the early evening.

Where you’ll sleep

• Erg Chebbi camp (1 night): a private tent for your booking, with en-suite hot shower and flushing toilet, and electricity for charging. Heavy blankets are provided in winter.
• Merzouga riad (1 night): a private room with bathroom at a riad on the edge of the dunes.
• Dades Valley (1 night): a private room at a kasbah hotel.

If you’d rather spend both Merzouga nights in the dunes, you can swap the riad night for a second night at the camp.

Best time to go

Shared departures run all year. Spring and autumn are the most pleasant, with warm days and cool nights. Winter brings clear skies and cold nights, and snow is possible on the Middle Atlas and the Tizi n’Tichka. In summer, the free afternoon at the riad is a welcome break from the midday heat.
