4-Day Agadir to Marrakech Desert Tour via Merzouga

The motorway from Agadir to Marrakech takes about three hours. This private tour takes four days instead, and turns the journey between the two cities into a crossing of the whole Moroccan south. You leave the Atlantic coast through the argan forests and saffron villages of the Anti-Atlas, follow the Road of a Thousand Kasbahs to the Dades Valley, walk through the Todra Gorge and ride a camel into the dunes of Erg Chebbi for a night at our luxury camp. On the last day you cross back west through the Draa Valley and over the High Atlas to Marrakech.

It’s the ideal way to link a beach holiday on the coast with a city break in Marrakech, with the real Sahara in between.

The route at a glance

• Day 1: Agadir → Taroudant → Taliouine → Tazenakht → Ouarzazate (about 370 km)
• Day 2: Ouarzazate → Ait Ben Haddou → Skoura → Valley of Roses → Dades Valley (about 210 km)
• Day 3: Dades Valley → Tinghir → Todra Gorge → Merzouga, then by camel to camp (about 290 km)
• Day 4: Erg Chebbi → Alnif → Draa Valley → Ouarzazate → Tizi n’Tichka → Marrakech (about 560 km)

Day 1: argan, saffron and carpets

We pick you up in the morning from your hotel in Agadir, Taghazout or Tamraght, or from Agadir Al Massira Airport. The road runs east through the Souss valley, where the argan tree grows wild, to Taroudant. Behind its long earthen ramparts, this old market town has a relaxed, provincial feel, and its souks are much calmer than those of Marrakech.

Then you climb into the Anti-Atlas. In Taliouine, a women’s cooperative shows you how saffron is grown, picked and dried, and explains why it takes around 150,000 flowers to make a single kilo of the spice. Over the Tizi n’Bachkoum pass, you reach Tazenakht, where women weave carpets by hand in the patterns and natural dyes of the local tribes. You arrive in Ouarzazate in the late afternoon and spend the night at a riad.

Day 2: Ait Ben Haddou and the kasbahs

The morning is spent at Ait Ben Haddou, the fortified village of earth and straw on the banks of the Ounila river. It’s the best-known ksar in Morocco, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a favourite of film-makers. Walk up through the lanes to the top of the hill, where the old granary once stored the village’s harvest.

In the afternoon you head east on the Road of a Thousand Kasbahs. The palm grove of Skoura is dotted with tall family kasbahs, and the fields of Kelaat M’Gouna, the capital of the Valley of Roses, are lined with rose bushes that bloom from late April to mid-May. You spend the night at a kasbah hotel in the Dades Valley.

Day 3: the Todra Gorge and the dunes

After breakfast, the road leads east to Tinghir, a long oasis town whose palm groves follow the river beneath the mountains. Just north of the town, you enter the Todra Gorge and walk along the stream between cliffs around 300 metres high.

The afternoon drive crosses the stony plateau of the pre-Sahara to Merzouga. There, the dunes of Erg Chebbi rise up to about 150 metres above the plain. Your camels are waiting at the edge of the sand. Ride into the dunes for the sunset, and arrive at camp as the stars come out. Dinner is followed by drumming around the fire.

Day 4: across the south to Marrakech

Climb a dune for the sunrise, then ride back for breakfast. The last day is the longest, taking the southern road west past the fossil town of Alnif and the volcanic hills of the Jbel Saghro to the Draa Valley, where palm groves and old kasbahs line the river. You stop for lunch in Ouarzazate, then cross the High Atlas by the Tizi n’Tichka pass, at 2,260 metres, and descend to Marrakech, arriving in the evening at your riad or at the airport.

Why not just take the motorway?

The motorway is fast, but it bypasses everything that makes southern Morocco special. On this route you see the argan forests and the saffron country of the Anti-Atlas, the kasbahs and gorges of the south, and the great dunes of the Sahara, all places that travellers based on the coast rarely reach. Because you’re heading to Marrakech anyway, you don’t have to drive back to Agadir, so the whole trip moves forward rather than looping back on itself.

Arriving in Marrakech

The tour ends in the evening on day four, after a nine-hour drive from the dunes, so it’s worth planning your first night in Marrakech in advance. Most riads are inside the medina, where cars can’t go; your driver drops you at the nearest point the road reaches and walks you to the door, and porters with handcarts can help with your luggage. If you’re flying out the same day, choose an evening flight well after your expected arrival, or better still, spend at least one night in the city first.

Marrakech is the perfect place to recover after the desert. We can book your riad nights and a guided tour of the medina with a licensed guide, covering the Bahia Palace, the Saadian Tombs, the souks and the square of Jemaa el-Fnaa, so you can make the most of the city without the stress of finding your way around on your own.

Dinner and breakfast are included every night.

Best time to go

October to May is the best period. The saffron harvest is in late October and November, and the roses bloom in late April and May. Winter nights in the desert are cold, and snow can occasionally slow the Tizi n’Tichka on the last day. In summer, Agadir stays mild, but the desert is very hot in the afternoon, so the camel trek begins in the late afternoon.

Travellers splitting their holiday between Agadir’s beaches and Marrakech who want to see the Sahara on the way between the two. It’s a good choice for families with older children and anyone who enjoys a varied road trip.

Good to know

• Day four is long (about 9 hours with stops), so don’t plan an evening flight from Marrakech that day.
• Pack for two climates: mild on the coast, hot by day and cold at night in the desert from October to April.
• Break the last day: we can add a night in Ouarzazate to split the drive to Marrakech.
