Agafay Desert Sunset Camel Ride & Dinner

Agafay is the desert on Marrakech’s doorstep: a sweep of bare, rolling hills with the High Atlas rising behind them. At sunset the landscape glows, and after dark the sky fills with stars, far from the city lights.

This half-day trip is the easiest way to experience the desert if you’re staying in Marrakech and don’t have time for a longer journey to the Sahara. We collect you in the afternoon, drive 45 minutes out of the city, and you’re sitting on a camel as the sun goes down. Then comes a three-course Moroccan dinner at a desert camp, live music around the fire, and you’re back at your riad before bedtime.

What is the Agafay desert?

Agafay isn’t a desert of sand dunes. It’s a stony plateau, or hamada, of rolling, pale hills and dry riverbeds, about 40 km south-west of Marrakech. Almost nothing grows here, which gives it the look and silence of a true desert, but it lies within easy reach of the city, with the snow-capped peaks of the High Atlas on the horizon for much of the year. Nearby, the Lalla Takerkoust reservoir adds a surprising strip of blue to the view.

For centuries, the plateau was used only by shepherds and travellers heading into the mountains. In recent years, a number of desert camps have opened among the hills, making Agafay a popular escape from the bustle of Marrakech for an evening, or a night.

Your evening, step by step

Afternoon pickup. Your driver collects you from your riad or hotel. Pickup times follow the sunset: around 3pm in winter and 5pm in summer. As you leave the city, olive groves and villages give way to the bare hills of the plateau.

Mint tea on arrival. At the camp, you’re welcomed with mint tea and have time to settle in, take in the view and walk around.

Sunset camel ride. The highlight of the evening is a one-hour ride across the hills, timed so that you’re out on the plateau as the light softens. The stones turn gold, then pink, while the Atlas Mountains glow on the horizon. Each person has their own camel, led on foot by a handler, so no experience is needed.

Dinner under the stars. As darkness falls, dinner is served at the camp: Moroccan salads to start, then a tagine or couscous, and a sweet dessert with mint tea.

Music by the fire. After dinner, musicians play Gnawa or Berber music around the fire, and guests often join in with clapping or drumming. Take a few minutes away from the fire to look up. The sky here is far darker than in Marrakech.

Return to the city. Around 9:30pm you set off back to Marrakech, arriving at your accommodation around 10:15pm.

When to go

Agafay is lovely all year, but each season has its own character.

• Spring (March to May): warm afternoons, cool evenings, and often snow still on the Atlas. This is the most beautiful time for the view.
• Summer (June to August): very hot in the afternoon, so pickup is later, around 5pm, and the evening is warm enough to sit outside comfortably late into the night.
• Autumn (September to November): pleasant temperatures and clear skies.
• Winter (December to February): crisp and clear, with the earliest sunsets and cold evenings. Dress warmly, and the fire becomes the centre of the night.

For stargazing, choose a date near the new moon, when the sky is darkest.

Staying the night

If one evening isn’t enough, you can stay overnight in a tent at the camp and return to Marrakech the next morning after breakfast. Waking up to silence and the Atlas in the morning light is very different from the evening, and it’s a lovely way to end a trip to Morocco. Because it only takes half a day, the Agafay evening fits easily around other plans:

• After a morning in the medina: do the Marrakech city tour in the morning, rest at your riad after lunch, then head to the desert.
• On your arrival day: if you land in Marrakech by early afternoon, Agafay is a spectacular first evening.
• On your last night: a quiet, memorable end to your trip before an early flight.

What to bring

• A warm layer such as a fleece or jacket. The desert cools quickly after sunset, even in summer.
• Comfortable trousers for the camel ride.
• Closed shoes or sandals with straps: the ground is stony and uneven.
• Sunglasses for the late-afternoon glare.
• A camera or phone with a charged battery, and a small torch if you’d like to walk away from the camp lights.
